EPA Class B and C vessels shall carry, in the vicinity of the vessel’s navigation bridge or pilothouse, not less than 12 approved handheld rocket-propelled parachute red flare distress signals.

Such distress signals must be stored in a portable watertight container labeled “DISTRESS FLARES.” The service use of the distress signals is limited to a period of 42 months from manufacturer’s date. With the exception of unpowered vessels such as canoes and kayaks, all Class A vessels will be equipped with USCG-approved Visual Distress Signals as listed in the EPA Vessel Safety: Deck Safety Equipment mobile app.
